Celebrated contemporary urban cityscape art practitioner, Tom Butler clearly recalls the time and place when it suddenly dawned on him that his calling lay in being a professional artist; as did his starred future. 2004, as it happened, and during a holiday in the south of France he enjoyed with his wife, where he candidly speaks of – and to paraphrase Butler himself – ‘his senses being awoken’. Taking up the story, the much sought after Butler continues; “I was mesmerized by the light, colour and texture of the place. Bright awnings and parasols amongst weathered stone buildings, with shuttered facades and crumbling masonry.” He also went on to mention what he referred to as ‘les publicités anciennes’; which were huge, faded adverts from bygone days that used to be hand painted onto the sides of buildings, and admits that perhaps this was the catalyst for his attraction to having text within a painting, as became his illustrative signature as such. To early 2018 though, and ‘Whitehall Flow’ is presented in the pictorial form of a hand-embellished and signed giclee limited edition composition, measuring some 16” squared and visually focusing its attentions on the titular subject matter.
