Long before ‘Shaggy’ was busy explaining that it wasn’t him, his namesake was making, well, a name for himself in altogether different circles; and aiming at an altogether more child-friendly audience to boot. That particular Shaggy was aided and abetted in his strictly animated capers by the one and only, Scooby Doo, and was a staple televisual diet for youngsters enjoying their formative years for a good chunk of both the 1970s and 80s in revised guises. As of the autumn of 2017, the topic is revisited by one of the UK’s most treasured contemporary figurative artists (cum-old skool nostalgia-peddlers), Craig Davison; who invites us all to join him in taking a welcome trip down memory lane this season. ‘Like Zoinks!’succeeds in covering every visual base which fans of Davison have come to love and, dare we say it, expect when a new release is on the cards, as it is here. Kids aping their heroes – complete with re-enacted histrionics – and muted hues and saturations which if we recall, were all omnipresent in the pictorially-muted period in question being the points in compositional question.
