‘Lost Alice’ is the moniker afforded Peter Smith’s brand new Autumn 2015 contemporary fine art portfolio, from which this latest board on canvas limited edition piece is directly lifted. Entitled ‘A Most Curious Way To Wonderland’ this hand-signed pictorial reveal witnesses a familiar-ish Alice makes her descent into another world, mirroring the original texts as penned by Lewis Carroll himself some 150 years ago this very year. However there’s a difference. Exchanging a rabbit hole for a Grandfather clock, and a child-like Alice for a 50-year old version, Smith and his collaborator, namely his wife, Jayne, have imagined a new scenario, complete with an almost new book to accompany it.
Peter Smith was so infatuated with the Carroll masterpiece he took it upon himself to add an additional 14 chapters to the story, which he then used as the basis for his visual interpretation of the past events, present. The resultant illustrative re-awakening sees a sort of Carroll and Tim Burton-esque hybrid, which is graphically fused together by a diverse array of compositional paraphernalia, rich hue and saturation and an obsession with all detailing.
