There’s icons, and then there’s ICONS.
And Marilyn Monroe always falls into the latter category.
Not the first person (or indeed the last, if you count nearly as iconic Blondie front woman, Debbie Harry) to be kept hanging on the telephone, Marilyn even makes the bland art of telephone conversation appear sexy and fuelled with a frenetic desire and energy. We can only assume she wasn’t on the blower to the call centre operating on behalf of a mobile phone network provider. And bearing in mind this was shot in 1962, she clearly wasn’t.
‘Phone Call, North Hollywood, 1962’ is one of a collection of 8 purely photographic studies which have been released this Spring as part of the Edward Weston Collection. Itself a very small part of the much bigger collective jigsaw of Monroe snapshots as compiled by Weston over the years, and now revisited and brought into the contemporary figurative photography-loving public domain courtesy of Weston’s estate and Washington Green. As a limited edition giclee-mounted reveal, hand-signed by Weston, it’s available to register interest in/order as of now.
