The Kinks once famously wrote a song which waxed lyrical about the joys of a Waterloo sunset, yet to the best of our knowledge nobody has ever penned some lyrics extolling the virtues of a Battersea Sunset. Admittedly that might have something to do with the fact that a Waterloo sunset is a lot less industrial/potentially more romantic looking than its Battersea counterpart, situated further up the River Thames, at least during the latter part of last century/beginning of the current one, and when this painting is set. This painting is straight from the brush and palette of respected and celebrated contemporary landscape and figurative artist, Alexander Millar, who certainly knows a thing or three about setting the scene and telling a very visual story, whether its pictorially plotting landscapes, characters or both in his illustratively towering visual documentations of here and now or then and there. Battersea Sunset is the latest in a long line of epic Millar compositional tales that capture the mood and ambience of a period and moment in relative history like no other.
