Judy Garland famously sang a song about finding herself somewhere over a rainbow, to accompany her character in The Wizard of Oz, also having found herself somewhere beyond the very same rainbow, but thankfully Kerry Darlington has resisted the urge to sing (although we’re sure that she’s got a lovely voice) about the rainbow and instead focused her creative efforts on painting that eponymous rainbow. And then placing her version of Garland’s character, ‘Dorothy’ in front of it, along with her trusty dog, Toto.
‘Study of Dorothy for the Wizard of Oz’ is highly respected contemporary artist, Darlington’s latest pictorial foray, and sees her reconnecting with fictional types in fictional scenarios once again, having also recently re-imagined Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan amongst other fabled children’s book titles.
‘Study of Dotty’ though is as colourtastic and engaging as ever, with the yellow brick road looking particularly glowing and inviting, especially countered by the grim visual austerity of 1930s American mid-west pitched in various shades of bleurgh on the less attractive side of that all-important rainbow.
