Acclaimed contemporary figurative artist, Fletcher Sibthorp’s very latest composition, entitled ‘Movimiento Aspasionado, sees the vivid, animated depiction of a triumvirate of female flamenco dancers mastering their art of passionate performance for one and all.

The background sees muted shades of sienna, sand, rustic, harmonious visual transcriptions of shades and variations of the colours captured on the aforementioned dancer’s dresses. A moving wall of reflected hue and saturation of the main spectacle.

‘Passionate movement’ is the literal translation of the composition’s title, and it’s clear to see why Sibthorp believed that this moniker lent itself to the study. This trio of consummate professional dancers, a troupe of some degree and renown, extol the dramatic, sensual virtues of flamenco as a means of contemporary expression through their fluid, seductive moves and implications and rudiments of form and physique.

As a captive audience, it’s not pictorially evident whether we’re the sole suitors to this impromptu performance, or if an unseen audience is privy too, just off the parameters of the frame.

Evidentially inspired by the feminity of the dance moves, the alluring, communicative reaching out and touching faith and ultimate connecting with each other as is intrinsically inherent through the art of flamenco performances. The shapes, shadows and sensory semblances that the dancers create are a known influence of Sibthorp’s greater body of work.

For us the best element is the way in which the colouration discovered on the trio’s immaculately conceived dresses, reflect and visually echo the equally as stunning and mesmerising backdrop to the piece, infinitely defined yet so incredibly discreet and subtle, deft of brushstroke at the same time.

The study evokes a sense of amour, of cerebral stimulation that lifts the mood and almost cajoles the body to manifest some sort of similar movements. An insatiably appealing painting that fosters a belief that you’re actually part of the performance, voyeuristically perhaps, enjoying and living the physicality and emotion of the performance that’s painted right out of the frame.
