Cast in the most resplendently garish of shadows, set amid the still of a subterranean level of evening’s entertainment, the reddest of red roses moves back and forth across a small, compact platform, a thousand perfectly sculptured ruffles and thrills, bare neck and shoulders and swept back hair, allowing the young woman in pictorial question an innate, unchecked freedom of movement and musical expression. Stare hard enough, and her backing troupe can just be made out, discreetly lifted and part-embossed from that blanket of background density, guitars in hand, legs crossed, lost in the music and the sway and heat of the night and its performance. ‘Bailarin y Guitarristas’ is signature Fletcher Sibthorp, the respected contemporary figurative artist who’s responsible for this, his latest viscerally coloured and effervescently punctuated visual stimuli. Alive, alive-O, the artist goes for the illustrative jugular here, cementing a rapturous, frenzied, sultry and sensuous piece of performance art.
