Whilst many of us imagine Monet’s waterlily series to monumentally-proportioned compositions housed in galleries and museums, it may come as surprise to learn that during his career the great Impressionist also committed work to smaller canvases.

He’d often do this at the outset of a particular piece to determine whether, once he’d explored the light and colour effects quickly and sporadically on this smaller surface, it would bear being transposed in a larger contextual surround.

These are the musings of acclaimed contemporary artist, John Myatt, who loves the beauty and simplicity of these more compact Monet moments. Myatt is of course something of an authority on Monet, given his recurring habit of aping the master through his own paints.
